Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, operated by Anne Arundel County Dept of Rec and Parks, consists of 1600 acres of tidal freshwater wetlands, forests, meadows, and fields along the Patuxent River. Located in southern Anne Arundel County, 20 miles east D.C. and 18 miles south of Annapolis, Sanctuary is designated site on Patuxent Water Trail. The Sanctuary is the largest park in system and includes one of the largest stands of freshwater wetlands on East Coast. The wetlands contain diverse stands of aquatic plants, home to many bird, fish, reptile, and mammal species. The National Audubon Society has designated the Sanctuary as a Nationally Important Bird Area. The Sanctuary is one of three components within Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve System, Maryland -- a research and education program administered jointly by National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), MD Dept of Natural Resources and Anne Arundel County.
