Location Description

Pine Grove Furnace State Park is steeped in natural and historical features. Spanning 696 acres, Pine Grove Furnace is located on South Mountain & is surrounded by Michaux State Forest. It is comprised of two lakes; 25-acre Laurel Lake, 1.7-acre Fuller Lake & the Appalachian Trail. Historically, Pine Grove Furnace was the site of the 1830 Laurel Forge, 1880s Pine Grove Park, and an 1892 brick plant. The park's historic place on the national register is the Pine Grove Iron Works encompassing approximately 176 acres featuring structures associated with the 1764 Pine Grove Furnace, which ended production in 1895. The 1870 South Mountain RR and the subsequent 1891 Hunter's Run and Slate Belt Railroad provided the railway lines to the industrial areas of the state park. The tracks remain on park land. Another major focal point of the park is the Ironmasters Manson. The mansion was built by Peter Ege between 1827 & 1829 from bricks manufactured on site. The English Tudor design was inspired by Peter Ege’s British wife, Jane. ***Pine Grove Furnace State Park includes the Appalachian Trail. The park is the halfway point of the trail which runs the length of the East Coast with the exception of Florida. The park includes a trail museum on premises. MPM 11/5/15
