Location Description

The home was completed in 1888 by Thomas B. Ripy, son of immigrant from County Tyrone, Ireland. His father had been a successful merchant and whiskey wholesaler, and owner of a small distillery. His youngest son Thomas followed in his father’s footsteps, entering the distilling business at the age of 21 and eventually became a major distiller, reputedly the largest independent distiller in the world at the end of the 19th century. With the money he made in business he built a magnificent home for his wife and ten children on a farm of 100 acres near the center of Lawrenceburg, Ky. It took about five years from the beginning of the project to its completion. The new home contained many features rare in homes of the time including a carbide lighting system, indoor plumbing, a tennis court and swimming pool on the grounds. This beautiful home sits at a historic cross road. In the history of architecture, the T.B. Ripy House is simply a rare and beautiful building. In the cultural history of Kentucky and the United States, and especially of the bourbon industry, the house still holds tremendous value and significance. This can be seen in the context of the industrial revolution and the formation of modern America. The T.B. Ripy house is a work of art that is also a definitive piece of American history, representing the people who lived and defined the American Dream.
