Located in the Sandhills of North Carolina, Aberdeen is adjacent to Pinehurst Area Golf Courses, the Southern Pines resort area and the Carolina Horse Park. Aberdeen's historic town center and charming town parks give a quality of life that lends itself to walking and a relaxed lifestyle. The area itself is a cornucopia of cultural riches in the performing and visual arts and outstanding educational opportunities.
Established in the 1700's by Scottish Highlanders. Aberdeen eventually became home to people of many nationalities and ethnic groups, including Irish, Germans, African-Americans, Latinos and Asians. Today the town's neighborhoods, festivals and historical societies preserve the traditions and flavors of Aberdeen's broad cultural heritage.
In the summer of 1995, Aberdeen received international attention as a host town of the Special Olympics World Games. In October 1992, the first annual International Sardine Festival drew visitors to Aberdeen Town Lake, to experience sardines, moon pies and RC colas.
