State Street Church, United Church of Christ

Location Description

The original façade was dominated by a central wooden spire resting on a tower that incorporated the masonry entrance. The wooden spire was struck by lightning and, in 1871, was removed. John Calvin Stevens designed the new red freestone façade, which was added in 1892-93. The width of the gable is emphasized by the screen of the three doors and asymetrical flanking towers. The tall narrow façade window reflects the delicacy of an earlier design. (Source: Greater Portland Landmarks website)
