Gray's Creek is a 6-mile-long deep-water tributary of the Lower James River located in Surry County to the south of Jamestown. Explored by John Smith in the early 1600’s, it is part of the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. Gray's Creek was designated as part of the Virginia's Scenic Rivers Program in the summer of 2020 and is accessible from the James River or from the Marina adjacent to the Surry Seafood Company at 633 Marina Drive, Surry, VA 23883. Gray’s Creek is sheltered from strong coastal winds and currents and allows guests access to marshes and swamps that support various species of wildlife and waterfowl.
Located along the banks of Gray’s Creek is the site on which a second fort was attempted by Captain John Smith in 1609. However, as the Jamestown Colony struggled to survive harsh conditions during "the starving time" that year, construction of the fort was abandoned. Only the raised earthworks of this endeavor remain on property attached to Smith's Fort Plantation.
The Surry Seafood Company Restaurant & Gray’s Creek Marina is owned by Surry County Government and currently leased for operation to Pack Brothers Hospitality.
