Many people think that the Helena Family YMCA's Camp Child is so named because of all the work that is done to support children in the Helena area. And while that is true, Camp Child is actually named after Harry W. Child, the benefactor of the grounds and lodge. The entrepreneur who designed and built the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park passed away before Camp Child was inaugurated in 1941 near Elliston, MT. The opening was held with great fanfare and broadcast live on the radio back to Helena.
Since that time, thousands of children have run the grounds of Camp Child and gained experiences that have lasted a lifetime. Campfires, horseback riding and a .22 shooting range were early activities. Today there are still regular campfires, but those are held after archery, climbing wall and zip line adventures.
The Mission of Camp Child is "The safest place to be yourself." From activities to supervision, safety is the number one goal. All activities are embraced with the Y's core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
