Buffalo is located in Judith Basin, bordered by Lewis and Clark National Forest land and between the Little Belt Mountains and the Big Snowy Mountains. History:
Willam Shiell, a homesteader on Buffalo Creek named the post office established here in 1890, buffalo for the large herds that roamed the area. Buffalo experienced a period of growth with completion of the Great Northern Railway's Billings and Northern branch line. The railroad platted the new townsite in 1907, and it was rumored that Buffalo might become the railroad's division point. This did not occur, but the town prospered with the homesteading boom until drought and collapse of the farm economy in the 1920s.
