Originally built in 1896, the building was known as the Stephen Girard Building and designed in the Beaux-Arts architectural style. It once served as the headquarters for the Directors of City Trusts, the organization responsible for managing the estate of Stephen Girard — one of Philadelphia’s most influential merchants, bankers, and philanthropists. Over the years, the structure stood as a quiet piece of the city’s architectural legacy before becoming part of the transformative East Market redevelopment project, which revitalized the block between Market, Chestnut, 11th, and 12th Streets. Through an adaptive reuse project, the historic facade and ornate architectural details were preserved, while the interior was completely reimagined into a modern, locally inspired hotel experience. When Canopy by Hilton Philadelphia Center City officially opened in August 2020, it became the first Canopy by Hilton in Pennsylvania.
