Location Description

Balanced Rock, the result of geological erosion, lies perched atop a cliff along Great Trough Creek. Balanced Rock appears as if the slightest nudge will make it topple into the creek below, yet it has maintained its current position for thousands of years. Consisting of a hard type of rock that does not erode at the same pace as the surrounding terrain, Balanced Rock remains whereas nearby mountains have diminished in size. Trough Creek State Park encompasses 554 acres in Huntingdon County. Located along a scenic gorge, Great Through Creek flows through Terrace Mountain and empties into Raystown Lake. The park is notable for its spectacular geological beauty including: Balanced Rock, a geologic feature whose name is self-explanatory; the ice cave, a natural cave with ice formations most of the year; and Rainbow Falls, a picturesque waterfall on Great Trough Creek.
