Named after John Marshall, the great Chief Justice of the United States, Marshall Academy was established in 1837, becoming a university in 1961. The school has since grown tremendously, particularly in the 1990's which saw the construction of the state-of-the-art Drinko Library, Jomie Jazz Center and the addition of the Graduate College. In recent years, the university has become well known as the subject of the 2006 feature film “We Are Marshall,” which depicted the aftermath of the tragic 1970 plane crash that killed the university’s football team and other passengers. The film was shot both on campus and within the city of Huntington.
