J.D Maggard's General Store in Letcher County is luckily not one of those instances.
The business has been in business since 1914 and has been family owned ever since.
Named after the founder, JD's daughter, Olga June Maggard now runs the store.
She said the fact that they are still open is a big deal.
"There is no mom and pop stores left, this is about all that's left," said Maggard.
She said their goal has never changed.
"We are doing the same thing that Daddy did, help the people in this community," said Maggard.
Maggard gets some help from her son and daughter, who together help manage the business.
Olivia Maggard said there need to be more places like this around the country.
"This is an analog place in a digital world and it's still important to keep," said Maggard.
She said they plan to keep the store open as long as possible.
"Our family has had this for so long that it would be a real loss for someone to have to go for a quart of milk 13 miles away," said Maggard.
The general store will celebrate its 100th year in business next year.
Maggard said they will hold an event to celebrate the occasion.
