Founded in 1883, the University of Auckland is the country’s largest university with over 40,000 students based across five campuses. The University has a mixture of historic buildings which sit alongside contemporary ones.
The Clock Tower stands at 54 metres, and is faced with Mount Somers stone. Inspired by the famous Tom Tower of Christ Church, Oxford, it has come to symbolise the University. The octagonal interior is vaulted and galleried with a mosaic floor and piers. It now houses the Vice-Chancellor and the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, the Equity Office, parts of Academic Services, the Great Hall and the Council Room.
The iconic Sir Owen G Glenn Building dominates the Grafton Road side of the city campus at the heart of Auckland's main commercial centre. Purpose-built to house the Business School, it contains fully equipped lecture theatres, computer labs, work rooms and social spaces, along with a café, clustered around a spectacular 26m-high atrium.
The University of Auckland Gardens includes a 41,500 square metres Conservation Area on the City Campus bordered by Waterloo Quadrant and Princes, Alfred and Symonds Streets. It has more than 400 trees.
Old Government House, completed in 1856, was the first mansion of its kind built in New Zealand. Classical in style with much of the timber facade cut to resemble stone, it played an important part in the government of New Zealand until 1865 when the capital was moved to Wellington. The house has since been converted into a staff common room and contains a Council reception suite, flats for visiting academics, rooms for the Federation of Graduate Women and a lecture theatre - in a grand colonial style
The University of Auckland has two art galleries located in separate buildings. The Gus Fisher Gallery at the Kenneth Myers Centre features national and international exhibitions of works ranging across all media, while the George Fraser Gallery exhibits work by Elam School of Fine Arts students.
