Western Springs is a wildlife sanctuary surrounding a natural spring-fed lake. The park has a well-developed network of footpaths that includes boardwalks through the wetlands and a walking track.
The lake at the centre is inhabited by eels, swans and ducks. Around the shores and wetlands, wild fowl including native pūkeko, teal, Australian coot and shovelers can be found amongst regenerating native plants, wide-open lawns, gardens, water gardens and water lilies.
There are plenty of shaded seating areas and picnic tables located around the park, along with barbecues, toilets, changing rooms and a large children's playground.
The park is surrounded by a cluster of major nearby attractions including: Auckland Zoo, the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT), the Chamberlain Park Golf Course and Western Springs stadium.
