The New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam, located at river mile 187.4, was built in 1937 to facilitate commercial navigation on the upper reaches of the Savannah River. Although commercial shipping ceased using the lock in 1979, the structure remains operational and is an important part of the region's water infrastructure. The dam is 360 feet long with five vertical lift gates, each controlled remotely from the J. Strom Thurmond project. The lock is adjacent to the dam and has a usable chamber 56 feet wide and 360 feet long with a lift height of approximately 15 feet. The lock and dam is managed and run by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
