Southwyck House, locally known as the Barrier Block, is a large, highly graphic building on the edge of Somerleyton Estate. Situated on Coldharbour Lane in the heart of Brixton, Southwyck House is near to iconic locations such as Windrush Square, Ritzy Cinema, and Brixton Market. The Barrier Block is in itself an iconic example of architecture in brutalist style, having been designed in the 1970s and completed in 1981. Its colloquial name refers to its original intended purpose: in addition to providing housing, the structure would have acted as a noise barrier against a ringroad which was never built. This makes the estate a relatively quiet space, despite its central location. The Barrier Block is available for filming via Lambeth Film Office. Please note that the rest of Somerleyton Estate (further low-rise housing) is managed separately by a TMO.
