Location ID: #004-10000503
The entire Manteo Bypass project runs from U.S. 264 to Shipyard Road in Mann's Harbor and over the Croatan Sound to west of N.C. 345 in Manteo, for a total of 7.8 miles, 4-lanes -- making it the state's longest bridge. 44,000 cubic yards of deck concrete- enough concrete to cover 278 basketball courts. More than 7,000 tons of reinforcing steel (or re-bar; if the re-bar in the deck alone was laid end-to-end, it would be enough to make a round trip from Manteo to Wichita, Kansas. The bridge rises 65 feet at its apex and is supported by 88 concrete columns and more than 2,000 pilings, which extend nearly 100 feet below the water. The bridge itself weighs more than 350,000 tons (715 million pounds). The "old" bridge -- the William B. Umstead Bridge -- will remain open, serving as U.S. 64 Business, which functions as an alternate route. This new bridge shaves at least 20 minutes off the trip from Raleigh to Manteo. The bridge provides a splendid view of the Croatan Sound and from it you can also see Roanoke Island from end-to-end. Because of the high quality of the wetlands along the Croatan Sound, DOT bridged the entire coastal marsh --3,000 feet of wetlands. Over these areas, the highway runoff is piped into a separate basin, which keeps the marshes clean. These areas serve as nurseries for many fish and crustacean species as well as nesting areas for many native birds. Ospreys have nests on nearby trees. Project between DOT, the Division of Coastal Management, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Manteo Bypass completes an important segment in the widening of U.S. 64 in eastern North Carolina.
