Silver Chalice

US / North Carolina
Listed By: North Carolina Film Office
Location ID: #004-10000727
Silver Chalice is a "side boat" of sorts of Roanoke Island's recreated 16th century Elizabeth II. Sixteenth-century sailing vessels carried aboard a ship’s boat for transporting passengers and cargo to and from land. This was necessary because the ships normally could not navigate the shallow coastal waters close to land. Silver Chalice is built of white cedar over oak. She is 24 feet long with a 6-foot beam and displaces 2,000 pounds. She can carry 15 passengers and requires a five to seven rowers. The boat also has a single mast and square sail that can be stepped when not in use. The construction of Silver Chalice was made possible through the combined efforts of the Friends of Elizabeth II and the Friends of the North Carolina Maritime Museum. She was designed by Michael B. Alford, former Curator of Research for the Maritime Museum, and was constructed at the Maritime Museum under the leadership of Master Builder Geoffrey Scofield. The name “Silver Chalice” relates to an incident that took place during the 1585 voyage, and is accounted for in a manuscript FROM the voyage. While several men were out exploring the area in a boat like Silver Chalice, it was discovered that a silver cup they had brought with them was missing. They blamed the Native Americans, or “savages,” as they called them, and “burnt and spoiled” the village of Aquascococke to punish them for the alleged theft. Today, in contrast, our Silver Chalice is used to extend the good will of our education and outreach programs to neighboring communities where Elizabeth II cannot travel.
