Originally built in 1812, the Chestnut Street Church is considered to be the mother church of Portland Methodism. The elegant patent-pressed brick edifice, flanked by two slender spires, exhibits a distinctive balance on the city skyline. The steeply sloping roof, buttressed by three pointed arch doorways, open timbering and handcrafted woodwork, are characteristic of the Gothic style. Large arched stained glass windows are attributed to C. H. Farley. The rose window is believed to have come from Florence. Dating from 1836, the organ case reflects the design of the façade and uses several of the original pipes. (Source: greater Portland Landmarks)
