Location Description
Known as Oxfordshire, the family homestead of Stephen B. Church is a 10,000+ sf, 2.5 acre landmark is conveniently located in Oxford, CT. The original home dating back to the 1700’s was later split into what are now known as the “East and West wings” which now flank the Neoclassical Architecture “Mansion” constructed in the 1920’s. Featuring Beaux Arts Classicism combining the classical architecture from Greece and Rome with Renaissance ideas is evident by the Ionic and Corinthian Columns and cornices. The interior of Oxfordshire features a grand entry and stairway leading to the second floor atrium. The homes 4 fireplaces, early period kitchen and original millwork provide a step back in time. The formal parlor is enhanced by an operating Aeolian Pipe Organ, one of only several known remaining in the US; another like organ can be seen in Hildene, the historic Robert Todd Lincoln home. It is only fitting that upon the grounds of Oxfordshire remains a large concrete crane garden pool fountain, as Stephen B. Church engaged in engineering and his specialty was deep well pumping machinery and in his day developed one of the largest and most important business enterprises of this character in New England.
