Located in the University of Connecticut’s Technology Park, the new 4 story, 115,00 ft2 Innovation Partnership Building was completed in 2017.Designed by the firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, It serves as a vibrant hub where industry leaders and business entrepreneurs collaborate with university students and faculty. Conceived as a “machine in the garden,” the building stands in striking contrast to its bucolic setting as its strong concrete and metal-clad forms stretch into the landscape. The IPB’s bold structural solution celebrates both nature and the spirit of technology by “floating” the upper lab volume to frame views of woodlands and distant hills. Freeing the ground plane in this manner, the landscape becomes a continuum from the entry plaza to courtyard and perimeter forest walking trails. The facilities are supported by a network of indoor and outdoor social spaces designed to encourage intellectual collisions and multidisciplinary collaboration. The lobby, which connects the tenant labs to the specialty labs, accommodates events and exhibitions showcasing the groundbreaking work being undertaken in the building and the Technology Park at large. By attracting blue chip and start-up companies alike, and fostering partnerships between academia and industry, the IPB facilitates the next generation of technological advancements.
