Location Description

The Workhouse Arts Center, a program of the Workhouse Arts Foundation, provides essential visual and performing arts studio and exhibition space as well as engaging arts education programs for people of all ages and artistic abilities. Set on 55 acres of land in the historic D.C. Workhouse and Reformatory, the Workhouse provides a home for more than 100 of the regions finest professional and emerging artists as well as cooperative studios, performance and theatre venues, dedicated gallery space, and event facilities. 38 disciplinary cells (c. 1970s) are located in a vacant building on the grounds of the former D.C. Correctional facility in Lorton, Virginia. These recently restored cells are part of a museum about the history of the prison but are currently unused. Many of the buildings of the former prison remain unchanged since they were built in the 1930s. The interiors presently contain artist studios and galleries but the exteriors are as they were. Several prison guard towers are also still standing.
