Spotsylvania, VA, 22553 US / VA
The jail was built in 1855, after the 1839 Jail burned in 1853. After the Chancellorsville Battle in 1863, the Courthouse green and Jail yard were holding areas for Union prisoners. It served as a jail up until 1943 and is now a museum. There is a sign over the door that reads “no talking to prisoners”. The jail is also known for the escape of George Boxley, a white man who facilitated the planning of a slave insurrection by allowing slaves to meet in the store on his property.
