Salado, TX, 76571 US / TX
Once a stop on the Chisholm Trail, Stagecoach Inn has comfortably come into its own. This landmark hotel, built in 1861, believed to be the oldest remaining structure in Salado and the second-oldest hotel in Texas, also houses the oldest and most iconic restaurant in the Lone Star state. Both underwent an extensive, year-long renovation which began in 2017. The inn now features 48 re-imagined guest rooms, a heated swimming pool that offers weekend poolside bar service and the Shady Villa Bar featuring beloved, classic recipes, alongside current interpretations of Texas favorites. While the hotel still maintains its glorious historic presence, modern design aesthetics have been thoughtfully adapted throughout the property, from the curated private patios with butterfly chairs, to the Sferra linens and 24-hour concierge service. Of course, developer Clark Lyda did exactly what he said he would do and paid homage to its rich history while still imparting the present. The property hosts conferences, weddings and events. More detail is available upon request. History: The town of Salado built up around this historic stagecoach stop. It was one of dozens along the Chisholm Trail that fed and housed travelers — some of them famous, like Jesse James or Robert E. Lee, most of them simply weary from making the long haul from Dallas to San Antonio or Houston. You can still see the balcony from which Sam Houston gave a speech and the boards on the wall where you could still see the 1880s-circa newspapers that originally lined them. The trees that surround the building date back even further, and the building surrounds one tree. There’s a cave where you can see the roots of the trees growing through the cool underground air. Rumor has it that in the 1800s young lovers fulfilled a suicide pact here, and the Inn may be haunted by their spirits. There are also legends of buried gold on the property.
