Location Description

Built in 1882, the Old Sheriff's House, housed the first permanent Lake County Jail. At the time, the law required that the sheriff reside adjacent to the jail, therefore, the house/jail combination was built. The first sherrif's family to reside in the structure was that of Sheriff H.G. Bliss. In 1908 and again in 1928, additions were made to the jail, which could then house approximately 234 inmates. In 1958, the law requiring the sheriff to live on the premises was changes, and at time the rest of the existing house was turned into offices. The use of the building ceased in 1975, when the new county facility was built on North Main Street. The building was then purchased by a private owner and at one time was home to several shops. In 1988, the Old Sheriff's House Foundation was established. The building was purchased for restoration in 1990. In 1989, the building was put on the National Registry of Historical Buildings. In 1991, the restoration began and is still in progress.
