The Quinebaug Valley Council for the Arts and Humanities, familiarly known as The Arts Center, is a membership association dedicated to perpetuating the arts and humanities in the area. The association was formed in 1977 by a group of people concerned with the role of the arts and humanities in the lives of local citizens - before the days of the mandated local cultural commissions. As government funding for local cultural endeavors slowly disappears, the role of the Quinebaug Valley Arts Center again becomes more important than ever in our lives and the lives of our children. The building has been considerably modernized since the 1830s. In particular, the penthouse-like structure on the roof is from the 1870s. Notable features include the great arched demi-lune in the gable end; characteristic early 19th-century webbing between the chimneys; and inside brick panels at the ends. This was a building of grand scope, certainly the grandest house of its time in Southbridge.
