PLEASE NOTE THAT MAITLAND GAOL IS CURRENTLY CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC FOR TOURISM VISITS; HOWEVER, FILMING REQUESTS MAY BE CONSIDERED ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS. Originally opened in 1848, this classic sandstone walled maximum security facility was constructed almost continuously during its 150 years as a correctional institution, the last building being completed in 1993. Built on almost two hectares of land on the hill overlooking the township of East Maitland, the variety of structures within the facility makes it a unique location. Maitland Gaol offers the following features suitable for filming: 19th century and contemporary cells Razor wire Visiting facilities Industrial workshops Exercise yards Shower room Kitchen Guard towers and catwalk Hospital Maitland Gaol has been the location for shooting television shows, short films, documentaries, feature films, online and streaming content. The unique combination of 1800s stone cell blocks, more modern cells from the late 1990s as well as external cell blocks and yards can offer a wide range of location options.
