Broken Hill is the mighty ‘Silver City’, queen of the New South Wales mining towns. It provides the strength of a town with filming infrastructure as well as accessibility to a variety of stunning and exotic landscapes. Broken Hill is located on the Barrier Range in the far west of NSW via the Great Western, Mitchell and Barrier Highways. It has a population of around 30 000. Broken Hill has long been associated with local silver, lead and zinc mining. The town is also the centre of the 16-million hectare West Darling pastoral industry which is protected by a 600-km dog-proof fence. Broken Hill is one of Australia’s most arid regions. From the Mundi Mundi Plain the landscape remains generally unchanged desert until the coast of Western Australia. Broken Hill township however is an area of pubs, parks and gardens. Temperatures are warm but generally do not exceed 38º within Broken Hill.
