Location Description

A progressive office building for its time, Qantas House reflected the prosperity and confident outlook of 1950s Australia. With an adventurous and modern design that used the latest American technology, it was intended as a confident symbol of the future of Qantas Airways. Located at 1 Chifley Square in Sydney’s central business district (CBD), this modern heritage building recently received a $20 million upgrade of all its internal spaces and finishes. The major work undertaken, including all building services and resealing of the main facade was made particularly complex by the requirements of the Heritage Council and Sydney City Council as a result of the building's heritage status. Although altered internally, its external façade remains largely intact. The upgrade reached practical completion in September 2004. Qantas House is a fine example in the Australian context of intact, post-war, multi-storeyed office buildings from the first phase in the 1950s.
