Price Building built 1872; Church Sanctuary built 1904. An historic landmark in an historic district, and one of the last places Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke before he was murdered. Two floors. The Price Building at 140 Belmont is a modest French Country brick structure is a prelude to a Beaux Arts masterpiece. Soaring columns frame arched doorways and windows; a circular balcony overhangs the main floor. Included in about 5,500 square feet of space on the first floor are an auditorium with circular stage, administrative office, conference room, dining room, universally accessible bathrooms, dining room and kitchen. The sanctuary at 597 Bergen Avenue is Gothic Revival. It too has soaring columns, arched stain-glass windows, center aisle and overhanging balcony. The altar and pews, which seat 1,500, are mahogany. The vaulted pipe organ works. The auditorium, or main room, comfortably seats 200-250 persons, depending on the arrangement of circular and rectangular tables. The building is wheelchair accessible from an exterior ramp and a chair lift from the sanctuary to the Price Building. A working kitchen includes a large food preparation area, commercial stove, freezer, two refrigerators, a freezer, double sink and dishwasher. The second floor features a full walk-around balcony church business office, computer room and two multipurpose rooms. Situated on a lot at the intersection of Bergen and Belmont avenues, the Price Building on the north side of Belmont; the sanctuary is around the corner on the west side of Bergen Avenue. The buildings are in the West-Belmont-east Lincoln Park Historic District. Adjoining the Price Building is a drop-off parking lot operated by the church. West of the lot and across the street are apartment buildings. Additional off street parking is available when PS 17 is not in session. Terms of use are affordable and flexible, as both facilities are in dire need of repairs, renovation and restoration.
