This Jersey Shore oasis grew in popularity after the War of 1812, with the advent of the steamboat, when vacationers could take a ferry from New Castle, Delaware to Cape May. By the 1850s, steamers brought as many as 3,000 visitors a day in the summer seasons, including celebrities and politicians like Abraham Lincoln in 1849, James Buchanan in 1858 and Ulysses S. Grant in 1873.
