Alice Springs, NT, AU / NT
The Simpson Desert is a vast expanse of rolling dunes, seemingly endless horizons and deep red sand. The Simpson is the world's largest parallel sand dune desert, with some dunes stretching for 300km long without a break. Many attractions located on its fringes can be accessed on a half day trip from Alice Springs. It's sand coloring varies from a deep red on the edges to "beach" colored sand in it's much drier center. A four-wheel drive vehicle is required to navigate the sandy terrain. Not suitable for summer months.
