Historic Minnesota Lakeside Lodge

US / Minnesota
Listed By: Scott Hofer
Location ID: #999-19436
This historic, architect-designed, log-sided lodge was built in 1930 for a prominent Duluth lumber and mining family. A functional baronial fieldstone fireplace dominates the lodge’s great room and is ringed by the second-floor balcony with log railing. The kitchen was renovated in the 1950s using an architect design inspired by a “kitchen of the future” featured in a Betty Crocker cookbook of that era. A wrap-around, three-season screened porch provides commanding views of the lake, landscaping terraces and fieldstone flanked steps down to the shore. Large sliding glass panels protect the porch from wind, rain, and snow, but open to allow for cooling breezes. Log tables allow over 20 to dine on the porch; a smaller, more intimate four-season dining area is arranged in the great room. An additional half bath is on the first floor. The second floor features a TV lounge and office/library along with six bedrooms and a full bath. The basement is partially finished with vintage cabinetry. Swim showers and a dry sauna are also in the basement. The lodge is situated less than 75 feet from the shore of placid Lake Dodo near Cotton, MN. The property has over 450’ of shoreline and sits on 11, heavily-wooded acres of birch and pine. A log-sided boat house sits in the water with a concrete slip that can accommodate a small fishing boat or runabout; a 20-foot cedar dock with an 8’x10’ pad and built-in bench extends from the boat house. A small sand beach with a firepit are next to the boat house. A log-sided, two-bedroom guest cabin (originally the cabin for property’s year-round caretaker) with bathroom and kitchenette is also available. A log-sided, three stall garage and an outhouse are also on the property. Lake Dodo is approximately 100 acres in size and has no public access. The lake is shared with less than two dozen cabins (most are seasonal) and sees relatively little boat traffic. Larger lakes with public access are minutes away if a bigger lake is needed. The property is approximately three miles off Highway 53 providing easy access, but retaining a sense of isolation. Downtown Duluth and the Duluth International Airport are each only a 35-minute drive away. Several bars, a convenience store and a café are less than ten minutes away. The property was originally designed and landscaped to require full-time staff. It experienced a long-period of deferred maintenance, but is being restored by the current owners in a historically-appropriate manner and remains fully functional. The property exudes a sense of peaceful, faded glory. Although normally closed for the season, the lodge is able to be heated and made available during the winter. The owners are willing to accomodate extended productions. Changes to landscaping and select rooms (provided they are historically appropriate) may be considered, but only with advance written approval.
