The Garden Battery - Mount Edgcumbe House

GB / England
Listed By: Screen Cornwall
Location ID: #999-21028
Garden Battery - Originally, on the shore here at Mount Edgcumbe was an 18th century saluting platform, mounted with 21 guns. Three of these original guns, taken from a French prize ship, can still be seen on the Garden Battery and are marked with the French revolutionary ‘cap of liberty’. The saluting platform was replaced in1862 by the present Garden Battery. Armament developments had led to the general re-fortification of Plymouth and the new Garden Battery contained seven guns in huge casemates, each with their own magazines securely placed deep within the structure. On top the balustrades and elegant little covered building to hold the brazier for firing guns, were all taken from the original saluting platform. On the beach below the Battery, great iron rings lie as a reminder of the anti-submarine nets which were stretched across the Hamoaze during the wars of the 20th century. The Garden Battery is architecturally stunning inside with brick built vaulted ceilings giving an almost cathedral like impression to the structure. The Battery is accessed via a staircase from the lower gardens in the Park and has direct access to a slipway reaching out into the river. Parking is available adjacent to the structure and although part of the Park open to the public 24/7 access can be restricted with prior notice.
