Since Goulburn was the largest town in the district, this court house built in 1881 was both local and district courts as well as supreme court. Designed by respected Governmnet Architect James Barnet, the court house today stands grandly over the Montague Streetscape. It is one of the most spectacular court houses in New South Wales. Internal access is not permitted, but could be used as a backdrop from the public park directly opposite.

The State Library of New South Wales traces its origins back to 1826. Work on the Mitchell Wing started in 1906 and was completed in 1910.
